As an outcome of being born and raised in Philadelphia during the 1950s, the popularity of Bandstand and Radio 99 (WIBG) created an early allegiance to the first generation of Rock and Roll music. The emergence and influence of legendary Philadelphia DJ Jerry Blavat in the early 1960s nurtured a deep love and appreciation for black vocal group harmony. Charlie Horner’s “Urban Harmony” radio show on WXPN (University of Pennsylvania) took him to the next level via exposure to the “rare” and “obscure” world of R&B vocal group harmony. Combined with a fascination for the magic of radio, these factors have had a profound effect on Frunzi’s life.
As a result, George Frunzi can be heard hosting ”Remember When” on WVLT (Cruisin’ 92.1) every Sunday (5-6pm) playing the first generation of Rock and Roll and vocal group harmony---the same station that features Philadelphia icon Jerry Blavat. Later on Sunday evenings, Frunzi is the host of Gold Radio’s “Down-On-The-Streetcorner” from 8-10pm---a show that features rare, obscure, vocal group collector’s items. Both shows are “old-time” radio programs featuring vinyl from Frunzi’s original 45 rpm record collection consisting of 12,000 records. The music is “played the way it was made---on 45 rpm records.” Both programs showcase music from Frunzi’s early roots in Philadelphia
